Bloodborne Beginner Guide

Bloodborne rewards aggressive, deliberate play. These fundamentals cover character growth, the regain system, firearm parries, weapon selection, and early exploration in Central Yharnam.

1

Choose a focused starting direction

Prioritize Vitality and one main damage stat rather than spreading points across every attribute. Strength supports heavy weapons, Skill favors faster technical weapons, Bloodtinge powers firearms and blood weapons, and Arcane improves hunter tools and arcane weapons.

2

Learn the regain system

After taking damage, attacking the enemy that hurt you restores part of the lost health. This rally mechanic encourages controlled aggression instead of immediate retreat.

3

Use firearms for parries

A well-timed firearm shot staggers many humanoid enemies just before their attack connects. Close the distance and press the visceral attack button to unleash a powerful counter.

4

Select a weapon that matches your rhythm

The Saw Cleaver is quick and reliable, the Hunter Axe brings reach and crowd control, and the Threaded Cane offers flexible transformed attacks. Movesets matter as much as displayed damage.

5

Upgrade equipment before chasing levels

Weapon upgrades provide a major early power increase. Explore thoroughly for Blood Stone Shards and reinforce one preferred weapon at the workshop in the Hunter's Dream.

6

Manage Blood Vials and Quicksilver Bullets

Blood Vials are the primary healing resource, while Quicksilver Bullets power firearms and many hunter tools. Both can be purchased or found during exploration.

7

Treat death as part of progression

Blood Echoes lost on death remain at the death location or with a nearby glowing-eyed enemy. Recover them when safe, or spend echoes before attempting a risky return trip.

8

Explore Central Yharnam methodically

Open gates, elevators, and shortcuts before pushing deeper. The early areas teach crowd control, ambush awareness, and pulling enemies away from groups.

9

Use Insight and the Hunter's Dream wisely

Insight unlocks certain systems and comes from discovering bosses or spending Madman's Knowledge. Return to the Hunter's Dream regularly to level up, reinforce equipment, and restock supplies.

10

Prepare for each boss by studying patterns

Before entering a boss arena, confirm your weapon is upgraded and carry enough healing. Use the first attempt to observe attack timing and arena hazards rather than spending all resources immediately.

Quick Tips

  • Rally by attacking right after taking damage to reduce Blood Vial consumption.
  • Keep one backup weapon, but reserve most early materials for a main weapon.
  • Gravestones and walls break line of sight and create breathing room in boss fights.
  • Open shortcuts early — they turn deadly runs into short walks back to the boss.
  • A practical early goal: unlock Central Yharnam shortcuts and prepare for Father Gascoigne.

Bloodborne Weapons Tier List

No single weapon dominates every situation. The strongest choice is the one whose moveset, range, transformation attacks, and attribute scaling fit your combat rhythm.

Fast attacks, strong serrated damage, and excellent early accessibility. Its transformed form reaches and pressures enemies, and it stays effective all game.

SITUATIONALMatchup Pick

Tonitrus

Built-in bolt damage makes it devastating against bolt-weak enemies. Fast attacks with limited durability while empowered.

Best for: Arcane hybrids

Bloodborne The Old Hunters Guide

The Old Hunters adds a separate nightmare realm with new areas, weapons, Caryll Runes, and some of the game's most demanding bosses. Level 60–80 can begin exploring; level 80–100 is more comfortable for a first complete run.

1

Unlock the Hunter's Nightmare

Defeat Vicar Amelia, trigger the Blood Moon at the Grand Cathedral skull, and take the Eye of a Blood-drunk Hunter from the Hunter's Dream. Let the Amygdala near the Oedon Chapel lamp grab you.

Bloodborne Chalice Dungeons Guide

Chalice Dungeons are procedural underground labyrinths created at Ritual Altars in the Hunter's Dream. Each dungeon stacks layers of lamps, levers, treasure, and a layer boss, with deeper dungeons dropping stronger blood gems.

  • The first major Chalice drops from the Blood-starved Beast in Old Yharnam.
  • Created dungeons appear as gravestones in the Hunter's Dream.
  • Lamps inside each layer act as checkpoints and fast travel.
  • Remove a dungeon from its gravestone at any time without losing overall progress.

Bloodborne Trophy Guide

The base-game platinum combines story bosses, optional areas, weapon collections, all three endings, and the Pthumerian Chalice route. One thorough playthrough with a save backup before the final choice covers almost everything; The Old Hunters has a separate trophy set.

Bloodborne Lore and Story Explained

Bloodborne tells its story through dialogue, environments, item descriptions, and boss encounters. This timeline follows the city from Byrgenwerth's cosmic discovery to the hunt, the dream, and the three endings.

Before the game

Byrgenwerth and the Cosmos

Scholars excavated the underground labyrinths and found the Great Ones and ancient Pthumerians. Master Willem pursued internal insight; Laurence turned to blood.

Before the hunt

The Healing Church and the Old Blood

The Healing Church built Yharnam's faith and medicine around blood ministration, with branches like the Choir pursuing communion with the Great Ones.

The Beast Plague and the Hunt

The hunter arrives seeking blood treatment as the beast scourge quarantines Yharnam. Old Yharnam shows the cost of an earlier outbreak.

The Hunter's Dream and Gehrman

The Dream serves as workshop and refuge. The Doll turns Blood Echoes into strength, and Gehrman — its caretaker — offers eventual release.

Rom and the Blood Moon

Rom conceals the eldritch truth. When Rom falls, the Blood Moon reveals the Amygdalae, the Mensis ritual, and Queen Yharnam's child Mergo.

Mensis and Mergo's Nightmare

The School of Mensis attempts a collective communion, trapping Micolash in a nightmare centered on Mergo and guarded by the Wet Nurse.

How to Read the Story

Weigh three evidence layers: directly shown scenes, stated item and rune descriptions, and player interpretation. Treat repeated names and symbols as deliberate connections.
